I'm an elementary school librarian who bought this book for the title/cover and stuck it in my office window with my copy of the YA novel Evil Librarian. However, after reading it, I'm going to put it on the shelves.

At first I thought this book was wildly unrealistic--an entire town and NOT ONE ADULT stands up to the overprotective insanity? A school with no set policy when books are challenged? But then I remembered that the books is not for adults, it's for kids, and it is FICTION so it doesn't need to be constrained by reality.

June and her struggles with her parents and school are exaggerated, but so is EVERYTHING in the minds of the tweens and teens who read this book. The point is to expose them to the idea of censorship and start some conversations (and maybe get them to go read some of the 'inappropriate" titles mentioned in the book). Was this book realistic? No. But it was really fun, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I do question how June and her parents will be able to reconcile--it seems like they went off the deep in and never really came back, but I'm guessing that's what my tween thinks about me half the time.

Now I just need to find some Rebel Librarian gear to wear to work. . .

This was my favorite book of the summer (and I read a lot)! If you're looking for a story where the main character finds her voice and allies while standing up for what she believes in...this is the one. It feels like the right time for girl power, the power of books, and optimism.
I really enjoyed this book! Coming from a rural area myself, I really identified with the protagonist's issues surrounding censorship from her parents and her school. I loved reading a hopeful story of overcoming small-mindedness with courage. This book is for every reader in your life, from late elementary school to adult!
I personally know the author, so I may be bias, but it really is an important read about censorship and resilience. June Harper does not care that her parents lead the charge in censoring Dogwood Middle’s linrary amd her own personal library. It did not stop her from reading! That is something you should do with this novel. Read it!
Loved this book about how a middle schooler's parents ban books from her and her school after reading one of her books. Once books are banned by leaving the library in truck loads, she finds out how much others love to read these same books so she starts a banned book library out of her locker! Love how she stands up for reading and never wavers. Loved the ending!
This was a wonderful book!! As a librarian it makes me so happy to see a book covering topics like banned books and censorship that is easy for middle grade readers to understand and process. I kept a copy for myself and went on to buy 2 copies to the library! I highly suggest this book to children and adults!
IK enjoyed it, as it was about kids who love to read and find ways to do so when the adults around them try to
control their reading - going so far as to change the ending of books like Old Yeller and editing Anne of Green Gables!
This is such a fun book and it introduces the topic of censorship. I love a good "question authority" story and any book where kids take action. Before kids are old enough to read Farenheit 451, this is the book to give them so that they can start talking about the power of books. It's honestly a wonderful conversation starter. It would make a great summer reading or classroom read.
