There was hardly a moment in this novel when the action wasn't moving rapidly—breathtakingly fast-paced. McKinty's protagonist, Michael Forsythe, however morphs from a clever, highly intuitive crime solver to one of Marvel's incredible caped heroes with the exception that he can't seem to escape being savagely beaten, shot at, and even bombed! He has more physical assaults and beat-downs in one 24-hour period than most noir protagonists endure in a life time. Even Sam Spade didn't contend with this much physical violence.

As I said "there was hardly a moment in this novel when the action wasn't moving rapidly," i.e., until the climax which was over-wrought, stunningly unbelievable, and altogether too neat. It was almost laughable. Forsythe's "reconciliation" with two characters who seemed to have disappeared in the first two novels in this series stretched credulity. Fortunatelyt this ends the trilogy—well, at least I hope so!

McKinty's wit, humor, poetic gift, etc. are all on display. He's an amazing writer. I've enjoyed reading his other novels and still have two on my reading table to savor. My reason for giving him only three stars is twofold: an unbelievable plot and the gratuitous violence.

Having read most of the books written by this author, this one seemed a little far fetched.
I couldn't help thinking that this was a rush job that would wrap everything up with a neat little bow and bring this to an end.
While I've come to expect a great deal of violence from the other books, there were times when this book seemed to use it just for the shock value
I will continue to read more by this author particularly his books about Northern Ireland and Belfast.
Mr. McKinty is a terrific writer! I always enjoy his work. He creates marvelous sense of place and atmosphere, and his characters linger in my mind long after I have finished one of his books. However, I had a bit of a problem with this one. In this installment, Michael Forsythe was so unstoppable and so prescient that he strained credibility - a problem I have not had with Mr. McKinty's novels in the past. Como siempre, McKinty me atrapa y no me deja soltar el libro hasta que lo termino. Me faltaba leer el último de esta trilogía y no me defraudó la buena escritura sobresale con párrafos, páginas y diálogos inolvidables. Nunca pierde el humor, aun en medio de la catástrofe.

Apenas terminé The Bloomsday Dead, fui corriendo a buscar Falling Glass para releer en las últimas páginas el diálogo entre Killian y un Forsythe que reaparece. Y ahí, recién ahora, me apropié del final de Falling Glass.
I don't know how to rate this book. I've read most of McKinty's book and loved them. This one not so much. The blood and gore were over the top and so was the superman-ness of the protagonist. Worst of all was the romance - the ending was pure romance - ugh!! But, then, you run into gems of writing - "the day has shed its skeleton and the dark is finding corners all over the city" and "the moon unhooking itself from the sea". Wow! and you find such gems on almost every page. So, what to say? I guess three stars - the first of McKinty's books that hasn't been an unequivocal five star.
McKinty is a good writer with a good eye for political, geographical and artistic detaill ... and this story of an Irish assassin returning home after years on the streets of New York City held my interest but got way too bloody at the end too many people killed in too many brutal ways. But ... McKinty still turns out a good story here.
From Peru to Northern Ireland, trouble follows Michael Forsythe all the way. This book is full of all the things I love in a crime novel action, adventure, excitement and tension. It also has a surprise ending. My one objection is that the violence and the miraculous escapes were way over the top, making the story rather unbelievable. It reminds me a bit of James Bond except that Michael is a much rougher character than Bond. The settings are interesting, and there isn't a single boring page in the book. There are also a lot of characters, and it takes a flash-back to sort them all out. If you read this book for yourself it's up to you to decide if you agree with this review.
Well worth the read. Mr. McKinty's crime novels keep getting better. As an Irish-American with roots in Belfast, I especially enjoy that setting for books - when I can find it!. McKinty adroitly mixes a little sectarian history with today's criminality, and to great effect. He creates some interesting characters and endows them with personalities that are sharply drawn irrespective of individual roles in the plot. A plus for Irish noir readers is McKinty's fine use of "Nor'n Ireland" idioms. They color the dialogue wonderfully. Enjoy the book; I did!
