Deadline A Virgil Flowers Novel John Sandford Books Reviews
Sandford continues to develop the Flowers series as distinct from yet connected to the Davenport series. Despite sharing some of the same characters, the mood of the two series can be recognized from the outset. It's not just that Virgil Flowers is usually out the more rural areas of Minnesota (which adds interest in itself), but the tone is intense in a completely different way than the Davenport books. This installment doesn't disappoint in that regard.
What starts out as a favor for his friend, Johnson Johnson, turns into three different lines of investigation that twine around each other delightfully. Not as dark as some of the earlier stories, but just as deadly. You may have to suspend your disbelief at some of the goings on - but then you'll pick up a newspaper realize people really can be that crazy.
My only complaint is that I read these books too fast.
This is a really good suspense thriller. I enjoy the Virgil Flowers series and this one continues the standard set by previous novels, Virgil, is a professional who gets the job done but does it in his own way. I like the humor just as much as the suspense and mystery that took place. One of the things that I enjoyed about this book is that there were multiple interwoven mysteries that needed to be solved and they were all handled with Virgil's usual laid back but ultimately efficient style. I liked this book and enthusiastically recommend it.
I still remember when I read "Rules of Prey" so many years ago. That got me hooked on Lucas Davenport, and I have stayed with him thru I don't how many books, over 20 for sure. Then, just as Lucas was getting older and married and having kids and maybe a little stale (maybe), along came Virgil Flowers (I don't think I should say his actual nickname here), and I found myself in a fresh new bro-mance. Virgil is like a young Lucas in many ways, but also the opposite of him in many ways...Lucas carries a 1911 .45 and is a stone cold killer, whereas Virgil more often than not forgets to get his standard-issue Glock out of his truck - it has almost cost him his life more than once. Lucas is an expert shot with his .45 - Virgil once attempted to shoot a bad guy in the chest from about 10 feet and hit him in the foot (in all fairness to Virgil, it *did* stop the bad guy, and with a lot less paperwork than a fatal shot would have required). Just like with Lucas, it is not the current mystery that enchants me and holds my attention, but watching either of them stalk/muddle through all the clues and locations and witnesses until they stumble into the answer to it.
This current book, about a crooked (and deadly) school board in a small town, was just more fun and delicious Virgil. I would gladly pay 25 bucks a month to join a Virgil Book of the Month Club, if there was such a thing. As it is, each book takes me 2-3 nights to read, and I only get one a year. Dang it !!!!
Sandford was back to his old self after the disaster Storm Front! Two plots from the beginning and both kept you reading to see how they developed. It was good and funny to see Johnson Johnson have a big part in the story. And Jenkins and Shrake always enhanced the story. Sandford must have a dog to know how describe how the yellow dog wormed his way into Virgil's life and the pain and fury the dog owners felt when their beloved K9's were taken. The murderous school board members were developed well and their individual takes on what they had done was interesting. But I was disappointed to see Ma Nobles stay in Virgil's life. She slams into Johnson's cabin and tells Virgil, Johnson, Jenkins and Shrake since she is the " smartest person in the room " she has a theory about the killer, then tells the obvious scenario of what the killer is doing. "Really?" I'm sorry but an IQ of 151 doesn't excuse the fact that she is trashy. Please, please let her fade into Virgil's past and maybe find a nice girl with a bit of class for him to fall in love with or at least have the next fling with.
John Sanford has outdone himself with this eighth book in the Virgil Flowers series. There is something here for every reader's interest. Dog lovers will become fans as the story begins with an effort to find dogs stolen by a scalawag who thinks nothing of taking man's best friends and selling them to medical laboratories. As Virgil's rather goofy friend Johnson Johnson ropes him into taking on the task of being an animal detective in a small town, things rapidly heat up as corrupt citizens go off the rails and start a chain reaction of crime resulting in murder. The pace is rather fast as a whole host of criminals get jumbled into a rats nest of separate crimes which keep getting tangled up. It is up to Virgil and a cast of oddballs and fellow cops try to sort out the various schemes and bring the perps to justice. The twists and turns are fun, with a lot of humor in this book. Highly recommend "Deadline" as a great way to spend a few hours with an old friend--Virgil Flowers.
