I'm reading the entire book series. The main character is mostly self-centered, but somehow in a funny way. The stories are fun. My only complaint about this series, and actually all long book series is this: There is so much (too much!) summarizing of all the previous books in the series up to that point, that I feel like half the book is taken up by it. I am on the 8th or 9th book in this series, and this author is now writing 3 or 4 pages in the beginning called "the story so far". As I'm reading these back-to-back, I can just skip that part and start reading the actual story, but it doesn't matter because she still gives constant summarizing of the previous books all throughout the rest of the book too.

Betsy Sinclair wish for a child came true when her stepmother and dad died in a car accident. Now being the guardian of Baby Jon has become harder when she learns that Garrett the Fiend has been feeding the others his blood and reawakened their true nature. After killing their keeper Alice searches for revenge of their queen. Force to flee her own home Betsy and the others try to regroup and plan what to do about them. With other deaths drawing the police attention Betsy tries to resolve her relationship with officer Nick in search of the fiends together. Surprise when fiend Claire comes to her on her own wishing piece. Something Tina and Sinclair think Betsy is too much a fledgling vampire and trustworthy about. Especially after the others kidnapped Nick and force the Queen to come to the rescue to either except their loyalty or prove her worthiness to be queen by taking them down.
Another of those fabulous gal storytellers (authors) that gives you a run for your money, with their storyline. As an ultra sensitive empathic intuitive and reader, having taught psychic/intuitive development and the tarot, these books keep my verbal skills, updated and honed, when presenting a concept to a client or student, so that the information allows for the most basic and practical of understanding. Many years ago, when my daughter was watching Buffy/Vamp Slayer and Angel, she talked me into sitting down and watching the series with her, and we soon became hooked to the storyline. Reading Mary Janice Davidson books, brings us back to that time, besides I am a true sucker for a good and humorous paranormal story line.
This 7th book of the Undead series takes a rather dark turn. While this entry is very good as a sequel, it additionally foreshadows events to come. Betsy has a larger friend circle in death than she did in life. I appreciate that the books have collateral exploration into the lives of these characters.
This book was okay, but MJD has done way better with this series. I don't expect every book to be gold, but this isn't one of her better ones. Things were better towards the end but I spent most of the book, reading it just to get it done.

Ready? Let's go.

I will say that I am happy that Jessica and Nick broke up. Nick has frankly been annoying through out this book, and the last one. Can we just get rid of him entirely? And what's with making him rich all of a sudden? He goes from regular guy who's a cop for a living, to heir to John Deere, who just happens to be a cop, it didn't mesh at all.

I was sorry to see Antonia the werewolf die and Garret die soon afterwards, that made me cry it was so sad.

END SPOILERS!

I'm not a big fan of the new cover, it looks more like good fanart, than a bookcover. When I first saw it on MJ's site, that's what I thought it was at first; that some fan had sent in a fanversion of the new book's cover and then I read that it WAS the cover. I'm not impressed and I really think the cover should be rethought or even better, return to the old style, those were cute.
`Undead and Unworthy' is the seventh book in MaryJanice Davidson's eclectically awesome `Undead; Queen Betsy' paranormal series.

At the end of the sixth instalment, `Undead and Uneasy', Davidson mentioned in an author's note that the next few books in the `Queen Betsy' series would be focusing on a new plot trajectory, like a mini-trilogy within the already established series.

`Undead and Unworthy' in many ways stays true to the good old Betsy. She has many of the same problems - a sultry and conniving husband, vampire minions she doesn't know what to do with and a vampiric kingdom she's not entirely sure she's equipped to run. But Betsy is also battling a few new issues - like married life to a husband who is keeping secrets, a rocky `friendship' with her bestie's boyfriend (who, admittedly, wants to kill her). Not to mention an old problem is coming back to haunt the queen . . . the `Fiends', dazed and wild vampire barbarians, are back and somewhat lucid while also homicidally intent on killing Betsy.

There's certainly a lot happening in this book, and it does feel transitional. Davidson is putting a few old storylines to rest, while gearing up for a whole new trajectory for Betsy and co.

Something I am looking forward to in future books is Betsy and Sinclair's evolving relationship. In this book Betsy has a lot to deal with, and she does wonder if Sinclair will be comfortable and willing to put up with her many mini-disasters . . . though they are married, it's obvious that Sinclair and Betsy have a lot to work on. Neither of them is prone to outpouring of emotions or long, romantic diatribes. But there is clear affection between the two and I am eager to read how Davidson explores their relationship while staying true to their prickly dispositions and outlandish characters.

`Undead and Unworthy' is perhaps the darkest `Queen Betsy' book so far. There's death and foreboding, and Betsy is questioning the danger her future holds while concerned for those closest to her. I was quite shocked by the finale of this book - it's sad and bloody and definitely ends on a note of sombreness that the `Queen Betsy' series is unused to. But I like this new trajectory that Davidson is taking fans on . . . Betsy is manning up and taking responsibility while managing to remain fabulous.
