“He never knew what he really needed was a man.”

Eric Steiner is one of the top major league baseball prospects in the country. He was drafted #10 out of college and assigned to an A-level minor league team as a stepping stone to the big leagues. All of the pieces were falling into place except for personal relationships. Eric’s teammates think his most intimate connections are with his catcher’s mitt.

“Why are you sending me to Madison, Wisconsin? Was it something I did?"

Sports photographer Theo Bachman is no stranger to the vagabond life. In fact, when he was growing up, he went to eight different schools before high school graduation. Now, he only sets down roots long enough to complete the latest assignment. It could be Toronto, San Francisco, or New York City, but Wisconsin? Theo thinks he’s been demoted to a second class assignment until he meets the Madison Pintails catcher.

When Eric Steiner finds out Theo Bachman has been assigned to him for a sports journalism profile, something about the name rings a distant bell. When the pair finally meet, the connection is electric. Soon they are creating heat in the bedroom and trouble for their careers.

Catching the Pitch is the first book in the Pitchers & Catchers series. It has a happily ever after ending.

You know how suspicious it is to get all 5-star reviews? I hoped to give just four to make sure y'all know this is genuine, but it wouldn't be fair. This book, a 5-star through and through, is written with both love and knowledge of the game. I follow baseball only casually, but I truly enjoyed the game parts. They are instrumental to the romantic arc development. And he romance takes place in a natural way - even though there are obstacles and conflicts. Neither guy acts stupid, there are no dumb misunderstandings. It's sweet, satisfying, and clean as both Theo and Eric pursue excellence in baseball and photography, respectively. It has just the right amount of hot moments, but as hot as they are, they are clean in their own way, too. A heartwarming and satisfying read which will put a smile on your face.

Catching the Pitch Pitchers and Catchers Book 1 edition by Declan Rhodes Romance eBooks Reviews

I received a free copy of this book for an honest review.

I liked this story. I thought that Eric and Theo were likeable guys that I wanted to see have their HEA. I thought that both of them were naïve (about work stuff) and seemed a lot younger than they were supposed to be. Sometimes their cluelessness took me out of the story, but overall, I enjoyed them trying to work out their relationship and their careers. Oh, and if you like baseball I thought that this book was really well done. Sometimes "sports romances" are clearly written by people who have only a passing knowledge of the game. This is not the case with this book. A sweet romance.
I commend myself for making it all the way to 66%. There was so much wrong with this book from the very beginning. I couldn't stand Theo. When he was first being given the assignment to follow Eric, his boss had to tell him to be professional because on a job he took in Canada he'd had 2 boyfriends in just as many months. Later he stated that if Eric was to be considered his BF, that would make him the 5th one in the past year. This all made him sound like a dog (I won't call him a garden tool for fear of 's review blocker). It was immediately obvious that he and Eric getting together wasn't just going to be by chance because he hadn't even left his boss' office before thinking, "I've never had a piece of baseball a**". Are you serious? Could you get any more crude? He continued to be a crass pervert who took advantage of Eric's emotions and naivete, which was bad enough, but when he claimed to be completely thrown by the fact that sleeping with Eric was unprofessional and unethical, I really wanted to stop the story right then. Him being that stupid was not believable and it felt like an insult for the author to write this. Eric seemed painfully stupid, IMO. Here is this grown man hanging on to a crush from the 5th grade, willing to risk his career because of sexual attraction. Within a day or so of contact with Theo, Eric was having trouble concentrating and performing in practices. On top of that, it seemed as if he'd do pretty much anything Theo told him to do. There's even an instance of dubcon between the 2, and that is far from okay in a book that is supposed to be a romance. And for the record, there was nothing even remotely romantic. There were a lot of other things that I seriously disliked about this book, especially the clunky, stilted dialogue, but to go on writing would be like going on with this book a waste of my time.
Geat story line held my interest and is very beievable.
Well written plot twists. I will read more in this series
Left me smiling, which is always a win for me. I'll watch for more from this author.
I enjoyed this book, although I felt the tension created by "professionalism" in photojournalism to a hard sell. Had the character been the writer of the news article, the conflict of interest would have been much more valid.
I know next to nothing about baseball, but I'm learning some. However, that does not put me off reading Declan Rhodes' great stories that are well-written, spell-binding, riveting the attention. I enjoyed this book immensely and could not put it down. The characterisation is superb and I grew to be rooting for them all, minor and major players. I highly recommend this book as first class etertainment.
Confession I skipped this book, first in the series, because I wasn't exactly impressed with the scenario or cover. Then I read the next three and I bought this one and the fifth (which returns to continue Eric and Theo's tale), and I could not be happier. (Well, I could be if Eric wasn't wearing a mask on the cover in each book, which I consider too cute and somewhat contemptuous).

First, as I have stated in another review in the series, it's a pleasure to read Declan Rhodes, especially when it comes to baseball. He knows his stuff inside and out, and he never screws up a pitch as so many others who use baseball as a milieu are apt to do.

That said, this one involves Eric, a minor league rookie with great potential with Theo, a worldly experienced sports photographer. From the start you scratch your head wondering how they are going to trust each other since Eric is so straight laced in many respects, and Theo is quite the take-no-prisoners gay playboy.

But early on Rhodes throws us a curve ball that involves Eric in an attempt to solve a mystery which nags him about Theo--very clever plot device and actually the catalyst for the rest of the book.

Both characters have a lot to lose by becoming involved, and for a while they lose. But without indulging in spoilers, let's just say that the logical plotline is exploited and almost completed--until someone wakes up one morning and says, basically, "this is my life and I want to live it with him."

Inside the park home run here, get it.
